The Woodcock-Johnson International Edition

WJ International Edition WMF Cuba Outreach

The Woodcock-Johnson International Edition (WJ IE) project consists of a small number of noncommercial, contemporary cognitive assessment instruments for specific Eastern European populations, based on need. The project originated with a small group of Latvian school psychologists who had attended a seminar by Richard Woodcock at the International School Psychology Association colloquium in Riga, Latvia. Woodcock’s presentation provided an overview of the Woodcock-Johnson–Revised (WJ-R) cognitive and achievement batteries. The Latvian psychologists approached Woodcock regarding their need for technically sound cognitive assessment instruments and, together, a collaborative plan was developed to construct and distribute a noncommercial Latvian adaptation of the cognitive portion of the WJ-R.

In the fall of 1998, Riverside Publishing Company, the WJ-R publisher, granted permission for the development of a shortened version of the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities–Revised in four European languages (Slovak, Hungarian, Latvian, and Czech). The translated and adapted Slovak, Hungarian, and Latvian versions are currently being distributed and utilized in their respective countries. The Czech adaptation is presently being standardized.

Three professionals (Ana Muñoz-Sandoval, Mary Ruef, and Anton Furman), working cooperatively with small groups of psychologists in each country, provided leadership for the translation and data gathering of each WJ IE battery. All data were sent to WMF staff for statistical analyses. After the first round of item analysis of data from an initial item calibration sample, a second round of standardization data collection was initiated. Each country’s sampling plan focused on gathering data from a representative sample of communities (varying by size) throughout the country. The United States WJ III equated norms were developed by WMF staff under the direction of Dr. Richard Woodcock.

Organization of the WJ International Edition Batteries

Each WJ IE battery is comprised of seven tests, each selected to serve as an indicator of at least one of the broad Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) cognitive abilities. The seven WJ-R adapted cognitive tests are:

Test 1: Verbal Comprehension (Gc)
Test 2: Memory for Names (Glr)
Test 3: Spatial Relations (Gv)
Test 4: Sound Patterns–Voice (Ga)
Test 5: Quantitative Reasoning (Gf, Gq)
Test 6: Visual Matching (Gv)
Test 7: Numbers Reversed (Gsm)

Publication of the WJ International Edition II

Dr. Anton Furman, WJ IE Project Coordinator, has officially introduced the second edition of the WJ IE, the Woodcock-Johnson International Edition II (WJ IE II), to a group of professional examiners in Brno, Czech Republic.

Organization of the WJ International Edition II

The WJ IE II battery is comprised of eight tests, each selected to serve as an indicator of at least one of the broad Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) cognitive abilities. The eight WJ-R adapted cognitive tests are:

Test 1: Verbal Comprehension (Gc)
Test 2: Memory for Names (Glr)
Test 3: Spatial Relations (Gv)
Test 4: Sound Patterns–Voice (Ga)
Test 5: Concept Formation (Gf)
Test 6: Visual Matching (Gv)
Test 7: Numbers Reversed (Gsm)
Test 8: Quantitative Reasoning (Gf, Gq)
